In honor of the free show at Amoeba on Haight Street, SF, I am posting this video--from site newmusicformundays. Don't forget their upcoming show at the Rickshaw Stop,155 Fell St., March 23rd! --Ed
Hope you had a good week. Before the weekend commences, I'd like to share with another new track from the latest from Panther. Their new record "14kt God" comes out on Kill Rock Stars on February 22nd. Previously just one person, Charlie (Panther) enlisted the ferocious of Joe Kelly (31 Knots) and HE became a THEY. The album offers contagious hooks and loops over crushing drums ushering PANTHER into new and lucid songwriting territory, even hinting at the political with songs like "Violence, Diamonds" and "Beautiful Condo." But just when things seem to be making sense the fever kicks in and everything suddenly unglues and before you know it you're dancing to full blown anthems about sexual obsessiveness and airplane paranoia.
The video company MVD Entertainment Group and Amoeba Music will host a DVD release party for "Flipper – Live Target Video 1980-81".
This is an ALL AGES event and is FREE.
The party is happening in San Francisco at Amoeba Music on Haight Street (1855) -- 415.831.1200; on Monday, February 18th at 6pm.
Flipper is scheduled to play a 15 to 20 minute set
Attendees may purchase a copy of the DVD at a special sale price one day before its official release, and ask band members to sign it.
About the DVD
Tracks include: Low Rider Friends One by One Ha Ha Ha Oh-Oh-Ay-Oh Love Canal The Wheel End the Game Shine Nothing Low Rider One by One Hard Cold Old World Life Sex Bomb
From the archives of SF's Target Video is this as yet unreviewed release from the early 1980-'81. Flipper signified an idiosyncratic punk rock sound that was slow and droning at times, as well as noisy and raucous.
As one of most outrageous bands of the early 80s, they influenced the burgeoning outcropping of grunge punk, including Nirvana. (Kurt Cobain supposedly sported a Flipper tattoo, and Nirvana bassist Krist Novoselic is in the current Flipper lineup.)
The DVD covers performances from Berkeley and SF's Kezar Stadium with also some new footage. Check out this amazing look into the life of a band that is still vital and making important statements Note: I spoke to now leader Steve dePace at the recent Ness Aquino benefit in San Francisco. He was upbeat about the new Flipper Release due this year on American Recordings, Rick Rubin's label.

People of the Book (January 2008), March, Year of Wonders, Nine Parts of Desire--
Pulitzer Prize-winner Geraldine Brooks will be discussing her new novel, People of the Book, the story of a rare illuminated Hebrew manuscript. The Australian rare-book expert, Hanna Heath, is called to Sarajevo to analyze the recently discovered Haggadah and her findings carry the tale backward through time in war-torn Sarajevo in the 1940s, Vienna in 1894, Venice in 1609, and ultimately to thebook’s origin in 15th century Spain.
“[Brooks’] depiction of the Haggadah bringing together Jews, Christians, and Muslims could not bemore timely. Her gift for storytelling, happily, is timeless.” - Publishers Weekly

"A landmark year for the Ghostland camp, 2007 found the group gaining notoriety for both their electrifying live shows and their acclaimed albums delete.delete.i.eat.meat. and Paparazzi Lightning, both self-released on their Trashy Moped imprint. What began as a challenge between two friends has developed into the duo wowing audiences from LA to London, creating 3 excellent LPs over the course of 2 years, and appearing on TV on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and PBS' Austin City Limits (in which they just released a DVD Live from Austin, TX). Robotique Majestique, due February 26th, continues hammering loudly away at the safe and the soft and the easily defined.
"Their 3rd full-length following up their breakout album Paparazzi Lightning, Robotique Majestique finds Ghostland Observatory staying on course of their electro-rock/soul mission: sweaty, raw-boned and direct from the future; committed to electronics, stuck on big beats, yet unmistakably powered by rock roll. Robotique Majestique is a stellar example of what makes Ghostland Observatory a stand out from the rest of the pack--electronic and fiercely dance friendly, but with the soul and personality of some of rock music's most classic groups. Frontman Aaron Behrens plays guitar, sings and commands the stage. Producer Thomas Turner, plays drums and synths. They share a love for Vince Young and Daft Punk, Los Tigres del Norte and the Animals. They mostly prefer to let their music speak for itself. It's not subtle.
"They are gearing up for a spring tour kicking off in their hometown of Austin, TX. Ghostland Observatory will be touring heavily throughout 2008, bringing their legendary live show to perspiring, dancing audiences worldwide. More tour dates to be announced soon."

"Carl, I'd like you to expand on your review of the new Fleshtones recording, "Take a Good Look" as it seems you neglected to mention the other co producer, Jim Diamond. In fact, I recorded and produced the tracks you mention in your review, "Jet Set Fleshtones" and "Never Grew Up' here at my studio, Ghetto Recorders in Detroit last July. It's the second record by the Fleshtones I've split with another producer/engineer and I'm very proud of these recordings and would like credit where credit is due." GANG OF SOULS: A GENERATION OF BEAT POETS "GANG OF SOULS (1989) is Maria Beatty's engaging documentary exploring the insights and influences of the American Beat Poets. The film conveys their consciousness and sensibility through candid interviews with William Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Diane Di Prima, among others. Designed as a tribute to them and to their spirit of artistic freedom, Gang of Souls also weaves in additional commentary from contemporary musicians, poets and writers such as Marianne Faithfull, Richard Hell, Lydia Lunch and Henry Rollins. The film seeks to truly capture the magic of the Beat generation and it's continuing legacy. It brilliantly expands upon how the poets reached new levels of creativity and inspired unprecedented social change." This sixty minute documentary (Bleu) is due out March 18th.

"The US intelligence community's enthusiasm for hi-tech innovation after 9/11 and the creation of In-Q-Tel, its venture capital fund, in 1999 were anachronistically linked in the article below. Since 9/11 happened in 2001 it could not have led to the setting up of In-Q-Tel two years earlier.
"I despise Facebook. This enormously successful American business describes itself as "a social utility that connects you with the people around you". But hang on. Why on God's earth would I need a computer to connect with the people around me? Why should my relationships be mediated through the imagination of a bunch of supergeeks in California? "It could just as easily be 1967. But no matter the year, Edmonton, Alberta's the Whitsundays certainly have a knack for writing yellowed, reverb-wrapped pop music, borrowing from the grand tradition of English psychedelia, garage, and vintage organ rock. With reverent nods to the flower-picking whimsy of the Zombies, the red-faced bluster of the Animals, and the delightful inanity of Syd Barrett, the Whitsundays' self-titled debut is a vintage gem, and a charming hodgepodge of '60s musical ephemera. Walls of dreamy harmonies, straight-away drumming, boney guitars, whirring organs co-exist with updated palates employed by bands like Dressy Bessy, The Shins, and Belle & Sebastian. Shares 2 members of Edmonton's Shout Out Out Out."

While Hell's reputation as a writer has perhaps been eclipsed by his musical contributions, It is important to note that his acclaim as a writer is steadily rising. It has always been so. Since he basically stopped playing in bands like the Neon Boys/Television, and Richard Hell & the Voidoids, and Dim Star, he has been more active in New York's literary scene and beyond. His website is comprehensive. Hell's first novel Go Now was published in 1996, and Hot and Cold, a mix of poetry, art and other writings, came out in 2001. Those remembered include Phil Frank, David Halberstam, Philomene Long, Norman Mailer, Diane Middlebrook, Tillie Olsen, Grace Paley, Fred Pietarinen, Allen Wheelis, and several others. "There Will Be Blood" opens in general release tomorrow in the US--Ed.
The storied gifts of "There Will Be Blood" flow like a freshly made, life-threatening wound; and there will be Academy Awards for this beautiful, deeply and darkly comic, concise epic by Paul Thomas Anderson; not the least for Daniel Day Lewis' portrayal of Daniel Plainview, the avaricious oil man, who is the central figure in the instantly classic depiction of a life devoted to extracting this black essence out of the ground of parched plains of the Southwest at the turn of the 19th Century.
Daniel finds a strike beyond even the most fevered dreams of wealth. He is opposed, both emotionally and spiritually, by young Eli Sunday, played by Paul Dano (previously best known perhaps for his role as the Dwayne, the non-speaking, Nietzsche-reading son in "Little Miss Sunshine") a young evangelist who comes from the family whose land in the Little Boston oil fields Plainview bought is where his great fortune began. Therein lays only the start of a dramatic tension that ends in blood.
Guitarist Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead composed the musical score and it is a stunning minimalist achievement very much in tune with the elegant, untarried lensing by Robert Elswhit, whose work with "Michael Clayton" was also very much appreciated.
Anderson loved Radiohead's music but Jonny Greenwood hesitated at first before turning out his opus. He and Anderson cut back the superfluity until only about thirty minutes were left. It is an impressive largely original (part of his 2005 commissioned work, "Popcorn Superhet Receiver," was also used) debut for Greenwood .
My prediction--There may be blood if Anderson, Lewis and Greenwood don't win Oscars!
